Monilek Hospital & Research Centre, established in 1986 is the first Private Renal Transplantation Centre of Rajasthan and is registered under Human Organ Transplantation Act, 1994. Dr S.L.Tolani, Chief Urology and Dr A.K.Sharma, Chief Nephrology have conducted more than 370 kidney transplant cases in the hospital with their specialized team of doctors and nursing staff. The survival rate of patients of kidney transplantation conducted at Monilek Hospital is 90% at the end of 1st Year & 78% at the end of 5th Year. Keeping in mind the status of many of the Indian families the transplant package provided by the hospital is approximately 2.0 lacs
Data reveal that more than 1 – 1.5 lacs cases of kidney failure are reported every year in India but due to various reasons, including non-availability of organs only 3000 kidney transplants are done.If a person suffers from a End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) then this condition is fatal unless dialysis (Dialysis is of two main types i.e Peritoneal & Hemodialysis) on a regular basis or kidney transplant is performed to restore kidney functions. Transplantation is most “natural” solution to kidney failure. The Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994, makes buying & selling of human organs illegal & cash for kidney transactions is a criminal offence. Live Related Kidney Donation is more acceptable as:
“KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION” involves placing a healthy kidney into the body where it can perform all the functions that a failing kidney cannot. Before the surgery recipient’s and donor’s various tests including blood and tissue typing are done. One kidney from the donor is removed with it’s blood vessels attached to it by making a cut in the abdomen or by laparoscopic method. The donor’s kidney blood vessels are then attached to the recipient’s blood vessels to ensure proper supply to transplanted kidney. In most cases diseased kidney is not removed unless infected or swollen. Donor is discharged normally in 3-7 days and the recipient in 10-12 days depending on his condition. The biggest risk in the transplantation is the rejection of foreign transplanted kidney therefore all the patients are put on immunosuppressant medicines that depress immune system (medicines cost approximately 10,000 – 15,000 Rs/month). Long term care of the patient includes regular dosage of immunosuppressant medicines & regular blood and urine tests to detect any sign of organ failure. Donors lead a normal life with one kidney and need not to be given any special medication.
Advantages of kidney transplant in comparison with other treatment options are :
Now-a-days in India, most Government and Public Sector employees and their family members are covered by state – supported schemes like CGHS & ESI. Employees of some private sector companies are also covered by medical rebursement scheme. All these provide some relief in the treatment.
Thus Kidney Transplantation is better option than Dialysis as it increases life expectancy and the patient can lead a machine free life.
